Info

Going green is the movement to be more environmentally aware and responsible for our planet  as well as our natural resources. Simple energy saving practices can go a long way! Turning off the lights when the room is not in use for more than ten minutes or turning off the water while brushing your teeth are effective energy and money saving practices. Other green issues encompass global warming, transportation, sustainable living techniques, environmental restoration, consumer awareness, reducing carbon footprints, resource conservation and globalization.

Energy Conservation On Campus

Energy cost and consumption is a key concern globally, nationally and locally. Positively, everyone within the campus community can reduce energy consumption on an individual level by practicing these 4 energy saving steps daily.

  • Leave the thermostat at a reasonable level. The university's standard is to heat to 68-70 degrees during the heating season and cool to 74-76 degrees during the cooling season. Windows should remain shut when heating or cooling systems are activated.
  • When a space is unoccupied turn out the lights even if the space will be unoccupied for a short period of time. This includes offices, classrooms and residence hall living quarters.
  • Turn equipment off when not in use.
  • Conserve water. It costs to provide the water, heat the water, and dispose of waste water. Limit your shower to a reasonable length of time and for people who shave, run the water in the sink only when you need to splash your face or clean your razor. Don’t let the hot water run while you are shaving.
Saving 10% would save the university $1.3 million annually.
